Soul Sunday : The Delfonics
Welcome back to yet another Soul Sundays, it’s good to be back. Lets cut the chit-chat and go straight to business. Soul music baby, this Sunday we have Philly’s very own The Delfonics. Like most groups around that time, they switched members more than I switch underwear through the years (seriously it’s crazy I can’t even keep up).the most important switch was definitely when Thom Bell joined The Delfonics as a producer, he definitely took the group to a higher level. So when he left the group to produce for The Stylistics and later for The Spinners. It was no surprise their popularity declined. They still had some hits here and there but alas they never reach success what the once had.
Couple of Delfonics songs were used in the Quentin Tarantino movie Jacky Brown (which is how I found out about them), starring Pam Grier, Robert Forster, Robert De Niro, Samuel L. Jackson, Bridget Fonda and Michael Keaton. The film helped create a borderline cult following for the songs and this group.
Like so many, many artist from their time they’ve been sampled like crazy by Hip Hop artist such as : The Fugees, Missy Elliott, Wu-Tang, Notorious B.I.G. and Nas, and many more. And let’s not forget, covered by even more artist. It’s funny there are so many version of one song, I don’t even know which one is the original.
Anyway as usual here a couple of tracks from The Delfonics.
Classic song which was featured in Jacky Brown.
For all the guys who had their heartbroken, just spin this one for your ex lol.
Lastly but definitely not the least (also featured in Jacky Brown)
That’s it for today I hope to see you next week!
