Thunder Soul – Story of Kashmere Stage Band
In 2001 Stones Throw records released the Funky 16 Corners, a compilation album paying homage to forgotten 60’s & 70’s funk bands. The album also featured the song Kashmere by the Kashmere Stage Band. A Houston ensemble led by Conrad “Prof” Johnson. The Kashmere Stage Band swept the high school circuit – winning 42 out of 46 competitions between 1969 and 1978 – with a disciplined fusion of big band jazz-funk and break-heavy hard soul that would give the JB’s a run for their money.
In February of 2008, 30 original members of the Kashmere Stage Band, all in their mid-50s, reunited for the first time in over 30 years to pay tribute to their legendary leader, Conrad “Prof” Johnson, who was 92 at the time. The story of “Prof”, the exceptional music program he built, and the historic reunion of his former students was captured in a feature-length documentary film, Thunder Soul narrated by Jamie Foxx, released in theaters in september.
